Search Engine Optimisation
Whilst doing your research into having a website built, we have no doubt that you will have seen the terms ‘SEO’ or ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ listed on various websites. SEO is so important that there are hundreds of companies dedicated to keeping big corporations on the first page of the major search engines for their chosen search terms. So for example if you type “cheap car insurance” or “LCD TV” into Google their website appears.

Search Engine Optimisation is just as important as having a website in the first place. There are only so many ways a potential customer can find your website; they could get the address from a flyer or advert, read it on a sign or search for your company name in a search engine. With regards to typing your company name into a search engine, if your website hasn’t been optimised they still won’t be able to find it, and to be honest all of the above methods rely on the person knowing about your business already!

What your website should be able to do is attract brand new business; let’s say for example that you run a pub in Kent, you want people to be able to search for things like “Kent pubs”, “pubs in Kent”, “live music pubs Kent”, “restaurants Kent”, “child friendly pubs Kent”, “Sunday roast pubs Kent”, “pub lunch Kent” and so on. You want it to connect you to people in your area, specifically looking for your products and services!

Full Search Engine Optimisation is included in the price of every Fuzzy Logic website.

What would you say to hundreds or thousands of brand new customers in your area reading about your products and services? This is what a Fuzzy Logic website and their SEO can do for you!
So, how does it all work?

The easiest way we can describe this is, if you think as the internet as a library, your website as a book and a search engine such as Google, as the librarian. Going back to before computerised records, librarians used to read or assess the book, categorise it by genre and also list it for specific elements within its content. Old fashioned ‘drop-cards’ were used that simply had holes punched in them to assign relevance for particular words or ‘keywords’. So being able to get a book on a particular subject or that contained particular content, depended heavily in some circumstances on the librarian’s interpretation of the material and relevance of certain words.

“Google is by far the most popular search engine in use today, simply because users perceive it to return the most relevant results.”

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search engines use automated programs called ‘bots’ or ‘spiders’ to travel the internet which collect data and web pages and then begin the process of categorising them, so they can be returned for relevant searches. Search Engine Optimisation is a process that encompasses every aspect of a website and its construction; on its most basic level it involves ‘keywords’ and ‘key data’ being included in specific places and the website being built in a specific way, which allow the search engines to easily and accurately categorise your website.

There are also external factors that affect your websites ranking in the search engines and these are taken into account specifically to stop anyone trying to cheat the system. Genuine, original, well designed and constructed websites need not worry!

What is Pay Per Click advertising?

Pay Per Click advertising or PPC, is a system whereby website owners/businesses can bid on their chosen keywords and essentially pay for their position on the top few pages of search engines. If you have ever seen the ‘Sponsored Links’ at the top of Google and down the right hand side, these are listings that have been paid for. SEO as explained above, apart from paying for the service, is free and your position on the first few pages is hard earned and is also known as a ‘natural or organic ranking’.

There are some companies purporting to be SEO specialists that are nothing more than PPC middlemen. You will be charged a monthly fee and they will run a PPC campaign on your behalf whilst making a cut. It is worth bearing in mind that if you want to run a PPC campaign to boost sales, with some careful planning you can do it quite easily yourself; they key is to pick the correct keywords!

While Fuzzy Logic doesn’t run PPC campaigns on behalf of its customers, we can offer help and advice on what to do if we build you a website or optimise the one you have already.
